He was born in Tarsus in 1948. He attended the Mersin Tevfik Sırrı Gür High School. Between 1973 and 1978 he had his undergraduate education in the High Painting Department of the Istanbul State Fine Arts Academy. In 1979 he was appointed as assistant in the same department. After the Istanbul State Fine Arts Academy was turned into Mimar Sinan University, in 1983, he took the degree of proficiency in arts; in 1989 he became associate professor, and in 1996, professor. He is still academician in the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Painting department.

In addition to his paintings, between 1976 and 1985 he was interested in artistic caricature. In 1976 he won the Barış (Freedom) Journal Special Prize of the Mechanical Engineers Society Industry 76 Caricature Competition; in 1977 one of his works in the International Caricature Biennial in the city of Tolentino in Italy was accepted to the International Caricature Museum; also in 1985 his work in the International Caricature Competition organized in the city of Trento in Italy won the Jury of Populace Prize.

In 1982 and 1993 he held two individual exhibitions in Istanbul. He attended many composite exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. In the painting competitions he entered he won

in 1983 44th State Painting Sculpture Exhibition Accomplishment Prize;
in 1990 Tekel Traditional 4th Painting Competition First Prize;
in 1991 25th DYO Painting Competition Honorable Mention Prize;
in 1998 International Atatürk Portraits Competition (organized by the Milliyet Journal) Second Prize.
In 2000 his work selected by the Turkish Jury of the international competition organized by the paint company Winsor & Newton was exhibited in London, Stockholm and New York.

In his paintings starting with 1989 he used chess as a theme. Since 1992, he painted with the aim of transforming the notes of the works of Bach for piano into the visual. He has works in which he transfers the notes of the Preludes and Fugues of Bach one-to-one into the painting. Critiques with scientific interpretations were published on his paintings of this kind. These are:

He still keeps on working thinking that the diversity of different probabilities in chess and music could be reflected on his paintings. In his chess themed works he attempts to reach order and system deformations rather than figurative ones. In Turkey he has works in institutions like İş Bank, Paşabahçe, Istanbul Stock Exchange, Destek Reasürans, Hilton Hotel, Tekel, Dolmabahçe Palace, MSGSÜ Istanbul Art and Sculpture Museum and certain private collections.

He is married to Prof. Dr. Banu Mahir of the MSGSÜ Science-Literature Faculty Art History Department and he has one daughter.
